Rural Appalachian Missions: Madison County, North Carolina

Madison County is in the Great Smoky Mountains region of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, bordering Tennessee. It is an area of mountains and valleys, with small farms and homesteads. With a population of about 20,000 persons, the county is most known for agriculture, crafts and mountain music.

2012 Dates: June 17-22, 2012 or June 24-29, 2012

Costs: $318 per person and includes dorm lodging (2 per room), 5 breakfasts, 4 dinners, missions and fun park.

This trip is most appropriate for groups that are primarily high school students (grades 7-12 welcome).

A pre-trip visit is required.

The group should have experience in home repairs and construction.

Any additional funding for materials is always appreciated!

The minimum group number is 10 persons, 2 chaperones per 10 students required.

The ministry here is primarily home repairs and construction.

The Timothy Project plans and coordinates the mission projects and assignments.

Basic materials cost is included in the mission week.

Lodging is in the Madison County town of Mars Hill in dorm rooms at Mars Hill College .

Sunday arrival, Friday departure.

Most meals are in the college dining hall; bag lunches are optional.

Groups provide their own transportation; note that large buses do not navigate well in the mountains.

Urban Mountain Missions: Asheville, North Carolina

With a population approaching 80,000, Asheville is the largest town in the mountain region of western NC. Long famous for its tourism, Asheville is also the hub of the region in many ways. The rich cultural diversity of the area's history is still reflected in its citizens today. Like any city in any state, Asheville has its share of needs both economically and socially.

Urban Coastal Missions: Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, SC is among the oldest cities in the US and the second largest city in SC. Located at the confluence of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers, it is known as The Holy City, owing to the number of historic churches and its history of religious tolerance. The Atlantic Ocean is a short drive away. North Charleston is an area in transition, trying to reinvent itself after decades of economic and social hardship.

This trip is most appropriate for groups that are primarily high school students (grades 7-12 welcome).

Some segment of the group should have experience doing some type of work on homes.

Any additional funding for materials is always appreciated!

The minimum group number is 10 persons, with 2 chaperones per 10 required.

We work in the poorer neighborhoods of North Charleston, our home base being the African American congregation of St. Matthew Baptist Church.

The type ministry here is varied and includes home repairs, construction, landscaping, environmental work, children's carnival, food bank, etc.

This week provides a unique opportunity to learn ministry through a Christian community development organization rooted in North Charleston.

The Timothy Project plans and coordinates the mission projects and assignments.

Basic materials cost is included in the mission week.

Lodging is at the North Charleston Inn, North Charleston.

Cumberlan Gap

Rual Mountain Missions: Cumberland Gap, Kentucky

Bell County is located near the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park , famous for the pioneer movement west, and the trailblazing Daniel Boone. The states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia converge here. With a population of about 10,000, Middlesboro is the largest town in Bell County and has the distinction of being the only known US town to be built within a meteor crater. Really! With the decline of the coal industry, the area has struggled to find a sustainable economy.

*The Ramada Inn has interior facing rooms, outdoor pool, basketball and volleyball, meeting room and breakfast buffet.

The Asheville area has many points of interest including downtown restaurants and shopping, exploring national forests and places like Sliding Rock, minor league baseball, Asheville Mall, Craggy Gardens and Mt. Mitchell.

8:30 am depart for project sites, lunch taken with you*.

3:30 pm - 4 pm close of work day and return to college

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

We will ask you to complete a skills assessment and return to us before your trip in order that we might do a better job of assigning projects. We hope to let you know the name of the persons/families you are helping prior to the trip so you can pray for them and prepare to help.

The skills assessment/interests form is important. The Timothy Project coordinates your projects and assists with materials and support. Adult leaders within your group have a primary role in supervising the team and its work.

You will have use of the college amenities of exercise facility and pool on a limited basis.

Some groups choose to do whitewater rafting on Friday before going home. We can make those arrangements.

*Lunches are on your own and may be prepared by your teams, with use of a refrigerator in the dorm for storage. You may also choose to have bag lunches prepared by the college, and we can make those arrangements for you upon request.

Breakfast served in the meeting room from 7:30 am - 9 am

Worship at St. Matthew Baptist Church , North Charleston at 11 am

Lunch at the church following worship

Free beach time at Isle of Palms County Park followed by cookout at 6 pm (park closes at 7 pm)

9 pm fun, games and fellowship in the NCI meeting room

MONDAY

6:30 am to 7:30 am breakfast is served in the meeting room

7:45 am depart for St. Matthew BC

8 am morning devotionals at the church

8:30 am depart for projects

12:00 noon lunch provided back at the church

Workday ends by 3:30 pm (it gets HOT!) and back to the hotel
