Madison County is in the Great Smoky Mountains region of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, bordering Tennessee. It is an area of mountains and valleys, with small farms and homesteads. With a population of about 20,000 persons, the county is most known for agriculture, crafts and mountain music.

With a population approaching 80,000, Asheville is the largest town in the mountain region of western NC. Long famous for its tourism, Asheville is also the hub of the region in many ways. The rich cultural diversity of the area's history is still reflected in its citizens today. Like any city in any state, Asheville has its share of needs both economically and socially.

Charleston, SC is among the oldest cities in the US and the second largest city in SC. Located at the confluence of the Cooper and Ashley Rivers, it is known as The Holy City, owing to the number of historic churches and its history of religious tolerance. The Atlantic Ocean is a short drive away. North Charleston is an area in transition, trying to reinvent itself after decades of economic and social hardship.

Bell County is located near the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park , famous for the pioneer movement west, and the trailblazing Daniel Boone. The states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia converge here. With a population of about 10,000, Middlesboro is the largest town in Bell County and has the distinction of being the only known US town to be built within a meteor crater. Really! With the decline of the coal industry, the area has struggled to find a sustainable economy.
